A double slit midi skirt pattern designed for sheer fabrics

The Glaze Skirt is a midi-length modern take on the classic pencil skirt pattern featuring two front slits that reveal movement as you walk. Specifically designed for sheer fabrics, it includes a mini-length lining to create a clean, layered skirt pattern effect. This design focuses on simple lines and a modern silhouette, making it a versatile staple for a handmade wardrobe.

The construction features a shaped grosgrain waistband designed to sit smoothly on the body. It fastens with an invisible zip and snap at the centre back. The pattern includes multiple finishing options, allowing you to adapt the assembly techniques to your fabric choice, from light organzas to mid-weight wools.

Design features:

  • Midi-length pencil silhouette with front slits.

  • Mini-length lining for a layered skirt pattern look.

  • Shaped grosgrain waistband for a smooth, clean fit.

  • Invisible zip and snap fastening at the centre back.

  • Clear, modern lines with practical construction details.

  • Multiple finishing options for different fabric weights.

Ideal for sewists looking for a modern double slit midi skirt pattern, this design works well across seasons and various fabric choices. Depending on the occasion, it can be made as a sheer skirt focusing on clean internal finishes for delicate fabrics like organza or mesh, or as a more opaque version suited for mid-weight fabrics like wool suiting or crepe, highlighting the straight lines of the pencil silhouette.

This skirt was designed with sheer fabrics in mind, but also works beautifully with more structured, opaque fabrics for a tailored look.

For sheer and semi-sheer options, we recommend lace, cotton organdie, organza, or dévoré.
For a more structured finish, consider wool suiting or cotton twill.

The mini-length lining is best made from a lightweight, silky lining fabric such as cupro, viscose, acetate, or silk, which will help the skirt drape and move freely.

For the waistband, you will need a ribbed ribbon with a scalloped edge that can be shaped with steam to follow a curve. This is known as grosgrain or Petersham.
We recommend cotton or viscose/rayon content as these respond well to heat-moulding. Avoid polyester grosgrain as it will not shape effectively.
If you cannot source Petersham or grosgrain, cotton herringbone tape is a suitable alternative.
A width of 12–25 mm works well; choose a tonal or contrasting colour to make this detail a focal point.
